Two methods are available to winterize the RV water lines – compressed air to blow out the lines or filling the lines with antifreeze specifically designed for RV use. If you choose the air pressure method, be sure to attach a regulator to the airline and limit pressure to 45 PSI. Open all the faucets, including the outside shower faucet, while blowing out the lines. Some systems inside the RV will require antifreeze in addition to the air pressure treatment. Refer to the individual product manuals located in the gray box for specific instructions on recommended winterization procedures.
Prior to winterizing, remove all water filters inside the RV, or if equipped, install the bypass line at the filter.
The following is a list of areas in the RV that should be included in the winterization process. For a complete outline of what to do to protect the vehicle during long-term storage and exposure to freezing temperatures, refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s operating manual.
- Hot water heater - Turn the bypass valve located at the back of the water heater to the Bypass position. Go outside, remove the plug and allow all water to drain from the tank.
- Aqua Hot – It is recommended that you do not blow out the system using air pressure because this process can damage the coils by leaving a small amount of water at the bottom of the coil. According to the Aqua Hot manufacturer, all Aqua Hot systems must be winterized using antifreeze.
- Fresh water holding tank – Open all low point drains to empty the fresh water tank. To assure all water is completely removed, you can also use the leveling jacks to slightly tip the vehicle to the side of the fresh water drains.
- Sani Con – Pour antifreeze into the gray tank. Open the gray tank valve and run the Sani Con pump motor until the antifreeze is visible at the end of the discharge tube.
- Washer Dryer Combo – Air pressure may not completely clear water from the pump so it is recommended to use antifreeze when winterizing the combo washer/dryer system. Refer to the product manufacturer manual for step-by-step instructions on preparing the washer/dryer to guard against freezing outdoor temperatures.
- Batteries – The batteries should be fully charged when the RV is put into storage. Batteries in a low state of charge can freeze and cause irreparable damage.
- Fuel Tank - Fill the fuel tank to reduce bacteria growth and moisture condensation inside the tank.
- Roof - Inspect roof seals and replace sealant that is cracked, peeling or damaged.
- Slide Rooms - Store the RV with the slide rooms retracted.
- Instant Hot Water Dispenser – Unplug and drain the unit.
- Refrigerator – Empty the box of all contents and disconnect the icemaker. Turn the refrigerator off and engage storage locks to provide airflow.
- Tires – Fill the tires to full air pressure as recommended by the tire manufacturer chart based upon vehicle weight. For best results, park the RV on a solid level surface where water won’t be allowed to pool around the base of the tires.
Finish the winterization process by adding a small amount of antifreeze down each drain trap to prevent freeze damage.
