Tech Tip Archive / February, Tech Tip 256 - TRAILER TIPS

Purchase a tow vehicle rated to properly pull the weight of the trailer.  At least one time each year have the tow vehicle’s shock absorbers and alignment checked for accuracy.  Tires on the tow vehicle and the trailer should be carefully inspected and filled to manufacturer specifications before each trip.

Maintain the hitch.  Frequently clean the hitch to remove oil and dirt.  Examine the hitch for loose bolts or signs of corrosion.  When unhooking a fifth wheel trailer, remember to lower the tailgate of the tow vehicle before driving away.  After hitching a trailer always do one final check to be sure the pin is locked in place.

Install wide side mirrors on the tow vehicle that offer an unobstructed view the full length of both vehicles combined.  Mirrors should be regularly inspected for loose bolts and kept free of dirt and debris to offer a clear view.

Avoid overloading the tow vehicle and exceeding the maximum tow capacity.  Balance the cargo load inside the trailer and store heavy items towards the floor.  Securely stow cargo and be sure all cabinet doors are firmly closed prior to departure to prevent items from falling and rolling around inside the trailer during drive time.

Reduce speed before beginning a steep descent and use a lower gear to avoid overworking the brakes.  Stopping will take longer due to the combined length of the tow vehicle and trailer.  Because the trailer wheels follow a different track than the tow vehicle wheels, start farther into the intersection when making a turn to avoid running up over a curb.

Stay within the posted speed limit to reduce sway.  When passing another vehicle, beware of air drafts that can cause the trailer to drift.  Watch for road signs indicating high wind conditions and reduce speed accordingly.

People and pets should never be allowed to remain in the trailer while it is moving.  For security purposes, always keep the trailer door locked during travel.  When refueling, perform a walk around inspection of the trailer to examine the hitch, safety chains and tires.

Look high and low when towing a travel trailer or fifth wheel to assure branches or overhangs, rocks or holes in the road, do not damage roof components, awnings, tires or axles.  Align the trailer with the site when pulling forward to help streamline the process of backing in.  While driving the trailer in reverse, keep an eye on the side mirrors to monitor fences, mailboxes, rocks or posts.  Position your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and move in the direction you want the trailer to turn.  If the trailer jackknifes while backing in, pull forward, straighten up and attempt it again.

Setting up camp during daylight hours allows you to thoroughly examine the site for uneven ground, obstacles and insect nests.  It is also always a good idea to double check the campground site number to avoid having to relocate if someone with a reservation for that particular site comes in after you have set up.

Place the chocks immediately upon arrival.  Removing safety chains should be the last step in disconnecting the trailer from the tow vehicle.

Perform one final walk around before leaving to assure that all items are stowed, especially the shore cords, antenna and awnings.  Be sure to raise all stabilizer jacks and remove chocks before driving the trailer away.
