Tech Tip Archive / June, Tech Tip 270 - DECALS

Weather and outdoor surroundings, such as tree limbs and salt air, can cause decals to wear over time.  Replacement decals are available through your selling dealer or Monaco National Parts.  With patience and attention to detail, decals can be easily applied.  When handling decals, avoid getting them wet.  Moisture can damage the backing paper, and the decal will fail to properly stick.

Begin by completely removing existing decals.  Do not attempt to scrape away old decals or try to remove the vinyl with a sharp object.  Heat the surface using a hair dryer or heat gun, and carefully pull the decal to separate it from the sidewall.  Use caution to avoid overheating the area and risking damage to the fiberglass.  Concentrate on small areas at a time. Once the decal is off, remove all traces of adhesive with 3M Adhesive Cleaner.  When the adhesive is eliminated, wipe the area with denatured alcohol to neutralize the adhesive cleaner.

When applying new decals, air and sidewall temperature must be above 45-degrees F.  Position the application area away from direct sun, high heat and wind.  Make a final check to confirm the surface is clean and completely dry.  With masking tape, attach the decal to the surface before removing backing to confirm placement.  Mark each location with small pieces of masking tape along the edge of the top, and at least one side.  Starting at one end, slowly remove backing and attach the decal.  Use caution to avoid wrinkling the decal, or creating creases and cuts.  Run a rubber squeegee over the decal to remove air pockets that can cause bubbling.

In the event a misstep occurs, remove the decal as quickly as possible before adhesive has time to set.  If the decal was just applied, it may be possible to remove simply by lifting one edge and gently pulling.

Regularly wash decals with a mild detergent and a soft rag.  Avoid abrasives, stiff brushes or harsh water pressure that can cause edges to lift from the surface.  Wax products applied to the sidewalls must be rated safe for use on vinyl decals, and should contain a UV inhibiter to absorb damaging rays that can fade.  When not in use, store the RV out of harsh sunlight, and when stored outside, regularly rotate the vehicle to minimize excess exposure to a single side.

A select number of decals from early model RV’s are in National Parts inventory.  Call 877.466.6226, for more information.
