Adventurtunity Family: How to Make Rain Days Fun in Your RV

May 10, 2022

Everyone’s favorite RV family returns to share helpful hints on how to make your own fun when the weather ruins your road trip plans.

You know the tune…. rain, rain, go away and come back another day. Oh, if we could only be so lucky… right? We can all do our best to avoid those rainy-day travel blues but if you travel frequently or full time then you know rainy days are inevitable. But they don’t have to be a complete mood crusher. With the right preparation your family’s rainy-day fun could turn out to be one of your most favorite days during your trip!

We get it, being hunkered down in your RV while it’s pouring rain when you were supposed to be out and about in the sunshine isn’t ideal. But it is bound to happen from time to time. And since we’ve been traveling the country for over a year, we know all too well how those days go. However, we’ve gotten pretty creative and now have an entire list of ideas and fun activities to turn those rain days into family fun days, all while in the comfort of our RV.

The obvious rainy day activity is to watch movies. And of course, we love this too! Wet and cold weather make it easy to want to snuggle up all day and binge watch tv. If this is your go-to as well, use what you have around to make an ordinary movie day extraordinary. You could grab your outdoor lights and string them up inside, use some spare sheets to make a fort, grab all the pillows and snuggle on the floor, shut the shades and make your RV dark like the theater, and don’t forget the snacks! Pop massive amounts of popcorn and find some candy for tasty movie time treats.

Another family favorite of ours is playing games. We always recommend traveling with a few games. If you have some packed, bring them out and play with your family. If by chance you forgot them, make up your own. We love charades, hide-n-seek (we actually play this often in our RV), and scavenger hunts. You could create a talent show, write stories and read them to each other, create a play and act it out. Truly there are endless game activities and if you need a little more inspiration head to Pinterest and search some ideas.

A few other rainy day go-to’s include crafting. We travel with a bin of crafts that include paper, scissors, crayons, markers, paint, paint brushes, glue and lots of little glue-able items. Our son is 5 so our crafts aren’t elaborate, but we have fun drawing, painting rocks, or creating art on paper plates and such. We also read books and do workbook activities or educational games.  Just because it’s raining, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun learning new things!

Baking is another family fun activity that we love to do.  Whether your family loves to do the actual baking, or just the eating, everybody wins with fresh baked treats! We usually travel with a few cake mixes, sprinkles and just add water cookie mixes specifically for when we need family fun in a pinch. If we know rain is in the forecast, we may pick up a few extras prior like ice cream and chocolate syrup for sundae making.

The best way to tackle rain days in your RV is to be prepared. Always check the weather ahead of your travel plans, but it never hurts to slip in a game or two, a few movies and tasty treats! And hopefully the next time rain catches you off guard you’ll be ready for it! Remember, RV trips are all about family fun and quality time together.  So, no matter the weather, every day is a good day when you’re RVing!
