Turn last-minute trips into lasting memories.

August 14, 2020

Make the final days of summer count.

Summer is just 92 days long. (And depending on where you live, sometimes it feels like much less than that!) Since August is already winding down, that means there isn’t much time left in the season. There’s no better way to eke out the last bit of summer than to jump in your Holiday Rambler for an impromptu getaway. Here are some suggestions to make it awesome.

Load up.

You probably won’t have much time to do all your regular prep work for this trip. So since you don’t know exactly what’s in store, be prepared for anything by taking advantage of the extra space your RV offers. You’ll be happy you packed swimsuits if you discover a place to take a dip. Better yet, bring the paddleboard or kayak. Why not? You’ll want trail-worthy shoes, water bottles, protein bars, and backpacks in case you find a scenic place to hike. And of course, stock the kitchen with everyone’s go-to snacks and drinks. Taking these things with you will save you money and time on the road.

Be spontaneous.

A fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type of adventure demands a different kind of mindset. Be open to whatever comes your way. Rather than having your nose in your phone trying to come up with what’s rated as the top attraction, gaze out the windows and see if anything jumps out at you. See a billboard advertising the world’s largest ball of paint? Get on that exit and check it out. Notice a beautiful field of flowers? Pullover and take a photo. Embrace the wanderlust and let the journey dictate the itinerary.

Take Fido with you.

It’s very possible your last-minute plans mean there’s no kennel space and it’s too late to ask someone to watch your dog. Don’t let that stop you! The great thing about having an RV means you have the room to bring your four-legged friend along. Just remember to pack the food, toys and leash.

Ask a local.

Let a native be your concierge! When you get to your destination, turn to people that live there for suggestions. Sometimes, it’s amazing the gems you’ll find when you ask someone, “What’s your favorite thing to do here?” or “What’s something you’ve always wanted to do in your hometown, but never have?” You’ll probably see a side of the area that can’t be found in a tour book or on a blog.

Let tech help you.

It may sound obvious, but since everything isn’t planned out, make good use of tech. Even if you know the area, GPS will not only guide you to your destination but also give you real-time updates so you don’t get stuck in traffic. Apps like Gas Buddy help you find stations and compare fuel costs. Save time by making online reservations to restaurants and attractions. If you want to download a Netflix movie or Spotify playlist but your data is running low (or already out!), check out a website or app that points you to the nearest Wi-Fi.
